Sunny. Dry. Air + 26C, track + 37C
Despite the past few sessions, Saturday morning traction left a lot to be desired. At the start of the morning Formula 2 race, the racers raised a lot of sand and dust into the air – and it became obvious that the track was rather dirty.
Tire wear on the asphalt of Sochi Autodrom is small, a layer of used rubber appeared on the trajectory only in the braking zones. The cars slipped, some managed to get the rubber to work, others didn’t, which affected the balance of power.
If on Friday the training was interrupted by red and yellow flags, then in the third session everything went smoothly. At the 26th minute, Pierre Gasly flew out in the 15th turn, but managed to stop the car before contacting the barrier. Valtteri Bottas drove off the track without consequences for the car. At the end of the session, Grosjean turned around in the 15th turn, he returned to the pits without any problems.
Russell and Elbon had their lap times canceled for going off-track in turn two.
Lewis Hamilton topped the protocol with a 1: 33.279 lap and seven-tenths ahead of his teammate, but behind Bottas the results were solid. The qualification will be interesting.
