The Romanian Post seems to have lost the modernization train, which is why private courier companies have taken over the market. The state company still boasts, from time to time, a small step towards digitization, such as the SMS alert service.
The Romanian Post does not seem to keep up with the current times, which is why its services seem outdated, frozen in time. All this time, however, private courier companies have gained ground, precisely because they come up with smart solutions and everything seems more convenient.
Meanwhile, the state-owned company is trying to take timid steps towards digitization. It is only now announcing that it is extending the SMS alert service for all types of shipments arriving from outside the European Union.
Romanian Post, timid steps towards digitization
The new system will be implemented in all 52 customs-assisted post offices. Starting with October 6, announces the Romanian Post, customers who receive parcels and registered or simple shipments will no longer be notified through written notices. They will receive an SMS to the telephone number on the postal items (if provided by the sender), which will contain:
- the number assigned to the item at the post office
- followed by tracking number (for registered submissions)
- the date from which the customer can show up at the post office with customs assistance to pick up the item
- documents requested by customs
- the period of time during which the item is kept at the post office
- the address and working hours of the postal subunit.
As I said, however, progress is timid. The service is available for small packages in the Standard category and small registered packages, weighing up to 2 kg, but also for postal parcels and EMS items, up to 30 kg.
Until now, the SMS customer alert system operated in 1,160 post offices across the country, for small packages arriving from the European Union, ie from all 28 Member States.
