Twelve years after his first participation in the Masters 1000 in Paris, Marin Cilic has fine remains. Winner, in three sets (6-0, 3-6, 6-3) and 2h25 of play, of a Felix Auger-Aliassime apparently diminished on Monday night, and who generally missed his match, with in particular a first set one way. Cilic will find Corentin Moutet in the second round.
Here is finally a great victory in this complicated year 2020 for Marin Cilic. The winner of the US Open 2014, now 43rd in the world, hurt one of the circuit’s most promising players, Felix-Auger-Aliassime, who went through an ordeal for the first match of his young career at the Masters 1000 from Paris. The fault, most certainly, to a groin discomfort for the Canadian, which pushed him to call the physio at the start of a third set yet unexpected for him after a little more than half an hour of play.
Ghostly Auger-Aliassime in the first set
Because in barely 36 minutes, the former world number 3 inflicted a bitter 6-0 on a 20-year-old player who did not seem at ease anywhere, only this evening at the service (only 36% of points won behind his first ball, on the return or in the rally (2 winning strokes and 14 unforced errors in the 1st set).
The Canadian, however, had the merit of not sinking afterwards, and while his opponent gradually fell asleep, he managed to break for the first time in the game at 3-2 in his favor. And if Cilic, in a start, broke in stride, his opponent again broke away after an epic game lasting more than 20 minutes! If he pushed his opponent to the end of the suspense, “FAA” could not follow after, always borrowed in his footwork, making too many gifts on the second opposing service ball.
While he began to string together aces (14 in all), Cilic again broke 3-2 in his favor in the third set, and if he missed his first two match points on the opposing service, he ended up winning at the net, where he climbed a lot during this first round. The Croatian promises to be a great challenge for Moutet, while the two players started this tournament with a marathon
