Day after day, the list of contenders for the last two qualifying places for the Masters tournament is shrinking. And unfortunately, this state of affairs is not the result of fierce fights on the courts, but of an accumulation of forfeits. After Fabio Fognini, Denis Shapovalov and Gaël Monfils, Roberto Bautista Agut has officially withdrawn from the Rolex Paris Masters. We do not know the reasons for the withdrawal of the Spaniard, but he does the business of Andrey Rublev and Diego Schwartzman, more than ever well placed to discover the Masters.
Currently 575 points behind the Argentine, 9th in the ATP ranking and last provisional qualifier, Bautista Agut could only count on a performance of choice at Bercy to toast him politeness. Mathematically, they are therefore only 5 to fight for 2 places: Rublev, Schwartzman, Matteo Berrettini, David Goffin and Pablo Carreno Busta. And given the delay of the Belgian (730 points) and the Spaniard (885 points) on 9th place, it is even more certainly a fight to 3.
Finally, given the more than uncertain state of form of Berrettini who has not played since Roland Garros, Rublev and Schwartzman seem more than ever to hold the rope. The suspense, already much reduced, may not last very long.
