It was to be a quiet entry into the Philippe-Chatrier. It is ultimately the biggest surprise of the women’s tournament which took place this Sunday morning at Roland-Garros. An earthquake caused by a 19-year-old girl, on a cloud, transcended and not impressed for a penny by decorum: Iga Swiatek. With a tennis dream, the Polish, 54th in the world, inflicted a real slap on Simona Halep, seed number one in the tournament and big favorite for the final victory. The score: 6-1, 6-2 in just over an hour of play. A butcher’s shop as magnificent as it is unexpected.
A tornado. This is how best to define what Simona Halep tried to overcome in this round of 16. Full of confidence, Swiatek started the game with a bang, practicing the game of his life. In the area, she did not leave a second to the Romanian, cornered as rarely but especially without response. A symbol ? Halep only made two unforced errors in the first set. But, opposite, the 19 year old girl sent wood: 76% of first balls, 75% of success behind them and especially 17 winning shots. On the ropes, Halep could only see the damage.
She took 6-1, 6-0 at the same stage last year
The rest was of the same ilk. A one-sided match where, a sign that nothing could stop it, luck followed it too. A line here, a perfect lob there, well-touched cushioning and a frankly outdated Halep. If the Romanian tried to hang on to the branches, she ended up being totally carried away after a perfectly managed second round, even at the moment of service for the greatest feat of her young career.
Last year, Swiatek had already fought against Simona Halep in the round of 16 here. The Romanian, impregnable, had stuck 6-1, 6-0. A year later, it was a humiliating 6-1, 6-2 that she decided to inflict on the Romanian in revenge. A dish that is eaten cold therefore. But given the explosion that this generates in the women’s table, Swiatek blew a very hot wind on this Roland Garros.
