Primoz Roglic, winner of the last edition, culminated an attack 800 meters from the goal to don the inaugural red jersey of this edition marked by the COVID-19 protocol, and surpassed the group of favorites led by Richard Carapaz by 1 second and Daniel Martin.

Movistar rider Enric Mas, sixth to 1 second in the same Carapaz mini-squad, was the best Spanish cyclist, while Alejandro Valverde, also a ‘telephone’ rider, gave 51 seconds, the same disadvantage as the Dutch Tom Dumoulin (Team Jumbo-Visma ), with respect to Roglic.

It was a sharp blow at 800 meters which was enough for Roglic to emerge ahead of the rest of the contenders for the red, after a day with 4 ports animated by a breakaway of 5 runners, integrated by Rémi Cavagna (Deceuninck-Quick Step), Jasha Sütterlin (Team Sunweb), Quentin Jauregui (AG2R La Mondiale), Tim Wellens (Lotto Soudal) and Jetse Bol (Burgos BH).

Before the neutralization of the quintet, the focus was on Chris Froome, suffering torso on the first slopes of Alto de Elgeta, ascent 18 kilometers from the arrival and anticipation of the climb to Arrate, witness of multiple battles to conquer the Vuelta al País Basque.

In Arrate, a first-class port, Ineos, oblivious to the suffering of its leader Froome, tightened the pace in the 5.3 kilometers to 7.7 percent, and with peaks of 13 percent, which was choked on Valverde and Dumoulin , two bastions that were lowered from the favorites drawer to the podium at the first change.

On the other hand, Enric Mas was seen exhausted on the slopes of Arrate where he achieved his first victory as a professional, he appeared at the top of his head and threatened to repeat victory when he jumped into the wheel of the American Sepp Kuss (Jumbo-Visma) to inaugurate the Spanish record in this atypical Vuelta due to the pandemic.

It was a mirage. Roglic took the lead shortly after the last kilometer banner and finished a task in an outstanding course – second in the Tour, winner of the Liège and a stage in the Dauphiné, among other achievements -, in which he placed the first link to repeat red in Madrid.

This Wednesday the second stage is disputed, between Pamplona and Lekunberri, 151.6 kilometers with three ports, the last of them the Alto de San Miguel, scoring first, 17 kilometers from the goal and in which an escape could triumph, if the platoon and the ‘cannibal’ Roglic allow it.
