Ola John returns to the Netherlands after eight years. The 28-year-old attacker, who played one international match for the Orange squad in 2013, signed with RKC Waalwijk on Tuesday.
John still had a contract with Vitória SC until mid-2021, but he was allowed to leave the Portuguese club. The winger has been fixed by RKC for one year.
“We are very pleased that we have been able to contract Ola”, says general manager Frank van Mosselveld at the site from RKC. “This was an opportunity that we invested in. His qualities are beyond question, and we expect him to be of enormous value to RKC.”
John went through the youth academy of FC Twente, where he made his debut in the first team in 2010 at the age of eighteen. Two years later, the Liberia-born attacker left for Benfica for 12 million euros.
The Portuguese top club successively leased John to Hamburger SV, Reading, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Deportivo La Coruña. Since 2018, the single international was under contract with Vitória, for which he did not score in sixteen league matches last season.
RKC already recorded another former international with the clubless Vurnon Anita in the summer transfer period.
