The club made moves in different areas to bring sentiment to everyone despite the pandemic.
Ángel Labruna was born on September 28, 1918. Physically he left in 1983 but continues to live in the memory and heart of River fans. His figure, taken from a photo in which he does a pirouette to hit the ball with his right heel, was immortalized in a bronze statue measuring six meters and seventy centimeters and more than six tons that is a few meters from the entrance to the Monumental along Figueroa Alcorta avenue. In honor of him the “International River fan day”. Because he is considered the maximum idol of the institution and not only for the titles as a player and coach, for the records, for being the top scorer in Argentine football and the Superclásicos and for being the father of the 75 title that cut the 18 years of drought, but also for representing to the maximum the feeling from the River fan.
The coronavirus pandemic did not allow festivities according to this day for River fans. There were no meetings, roasts, marches, banners, nothing like that. You couldn’t, of course. Still and all, red band fans they were present the same so that the day would not go unnoticed.
The fan Subcommittee surprised with a giant flag in which are the faces of many River idols throughout history. From left to right appeared Norberto Alonso, Ramón Díaz, Enzo Francescoli, Labruna, Amadeo Carrizo, Ariel Ortega, Marcelo Gallardo and Leonardo Ponzio. In the middle there was a graffiti dedicated to the fans and below a special date, the day that River won the Copa Libertadores against Boca in Madrid: 09-12-18. There is also the official date of the club’s foundation: 25-05-1901.
The curtain was unfolded in the auxiliary field of the club behind the Monumental and occupied the entire playing field diagonally. When it was placed, the members of the Subcommittee who went to the club lit red and white flares.
The images were disseminated on social networks and River fans highlighted the great work of that flag, an updated version of the one that was hung in the center of Sívori Alta, which had the faces of Labruna, fine-grained Plus, Alonso and Francescoli and it bore the inscription “they are the best.”
As soon as the hands of the clock indicated that it was September 28, River’s official Twitter account opened the celebrations with a post that said: “The feeling never changes, #Siemprestaremos. HAPPY DAY OF THE RIVER HINCHA”.
Everything was accompanied by a video in which images of great moments in the club’s history were compiled with the fans in the stands. At the end of the day, on this day they are the protagonists: those who leave everything for the colors and encourage non-stop from where they are.
The club museum also joined the social media movements. From that account audiovisual materials and unpublished photos were posted, such as a young Labruna, already with her characteristic little mustaches, at the door of her house.
There were also some words dedicated to his memory: “In @RiverPlate he trained, he met his life partner and saw his children grow up. He was a neighbor of Alvear and Tagle and Monumental. He began his legend as a player and ended it as DT. Ángel Amadeo Labruna, the eternal standard-bearer of our colors. #SiempreEstaremos “.
Also, current players, former players, managers, former managers, club employees, famous fans and personalities linked to River, left their messages on the networks.
Adidas, the clothing company that has dressed River for 38 years, did not miss the celebrations and presented a new shirt that combines the dark red color with the red band, the great emblem of the club’s history. The set is also completed with white pants and red socks.
The launch of the shirt is part of the “En Todos Sados” campaign, which pays tribute to River fans who are spread all over the world and who, despite the remoteness of the Monumental, do not lose their passion for colors.
The premiere of the new jacket will be this Wednesday, when the team led by Marcelo Gallardo receives the Saint Paul, at the Independiente stadium, in a match corresponding to the group stage of the Copa Libertadores.
For that meeting, Milton Helmet, already recovered after having had coronavirus, will replace Fabrizio Angileri. This was arranged by Marcelo Gallardo in the tactical work that was carried out at the Ezeiza site this Monday morning.
The eleven to face the São Paulo team will be: Franco Armani; Gonzalo Montiel, Lucas Martínez Quarta, Javier Pinola, Casco; Ignacio Fernández, Enzo Pérez, Nicolás De La Cruz; Julián Alvarez, Rafael Borré and Matías Suárez.
