Johan Neeskens, Frank Rijkaard, Clarence Seedorf and Ruud Gullit can hope for a place in the best team of all time, according to the French magazine France Football announced on Monday evening.
In the category of controlling midfielders, besides Neeskens, Seedorf and Rijkaard, Sergio Busquets, Josep Guardiola, Andrea Pirlo, Xavi and Xabi Alonso have been nominated. In total there are twenty contenders and only two players are included in the best team ever.
Ruud Gullit is the only nominated Dutchman among the attacking midfielders. The former player of Feyenoord, PSV and AC Milan, among others, has fierce competition with Diego Maradona, Andrés Iniesta, Zinedine Zidane, Michel Platini and Bobby Charlton.
Last week, the nominated keepers and defenders were the first to be announced. With Edwin van der Sar, Wim Suurbier, Ronald Koeman and Ruud Krol, four Dutchmen already had a chance of a place in the 3-4-3 system. Next week it will become clear which attackers (right winger, left winger and strikers) have been nominated.
Normally reaches France Football in December the Golden Ball awarded to the best player of the year. However, the magazine is of the opinion that due to the corona crisis, no representative picture of the best football players of 2020 can be sketched and therefore decided to create this election once.
The nominees are determined by France Football, but the winners are chosen by a total of 170 journalists, and fans can vote too. The best team of all time will be revealed in December.
