On Friday, Honda announced their retirement from Formula 1 at the end of the 2021 season. Red Bull Racing chief Christian Horner and AlphaTauri chief Franz Toast commented on their powertrain supplier’s decision to end the championship.
Christian Horner: “The team understands how difficult it was for Honda Motor Company to make the decision to leave Formula 1 after the end of the 2021 season. The shift in focus in the automotive industry led Honda to focus its resources on other areas. We understand and respect the reasons for this.
Honda’s decision is becoming an obvious problem for our team, but we have been competing in Formula 1 for a long time and have previously proven that we have everything we need to effectively respond to new challenges.
We are disappointed that we will not be able to continue our partnership with Honda, but we are still proud of the joint success – five wins and fifteen podiums with both teams of Red Bull. We thank everyone at Honda for their incredible efforts and dedication.
Our common goal for 2020 and 2021 remains unchanged – to fight for victories and the title. By signing the Agreement of Accord, Red Bull Racing remains committed to Formula 1 in the long term. We are looking forward to a new era of innovation, development and success.
Now our group of companies will need additional time to assess and find the most competitive power plant for 2022 and beyond. “
Franz Toast: “In 2018, a very good and professional relationship was established between Scuderia AlphaTauri and Honda. In recent years we have achieved success by winning the race and climbing to the second and third steps of the podium. It is a shame that Honda decided to abandon Formula 1, as the performance of their power plant was constantly improving, becoming in a short time one of the best engines in the championship. I am convinced that together we will continue to achieve high results in the remaining races of this season and next year.
Of course, we respect the reason why Honda has chosen to focus on green initiatives and the pursuit of carbon neutrality. Everyone at AlphaTauri wishes them the best in the future. We are sincerely grateful to Honda for the fruitful cooperation – we enjoyed every day we worked together.
It will not be easy to find a powertrain manufacturer like Honda, but we will explore all possibilities to find the best engine for 2022 and beyond. ”
