Sergio Ramos played a leading role on Saturday in the draw of Spain against Switzerland. The captain, who played his 177th international match and with that broke the European international record of Italian Gianluigi Buffon, missed two penalties and saw his team get no further than a 1-1 draw.

Spain, which also stuck at 1-1 against the Dutch national team on Wednesday, fell behind in Basel in the 26th minute. Remo Freuler tapped a cross from Breel Embolo with a beautiful foot movement.
Ramos prevented the 2-0 after the break with an intervention on the goal line, after which he was allowed to build from the spot because of a handball in the Swiss penalty area. Goalkeeper Yann Sommer, however, reversed the goal of the Real Madrid defender.
After a red card for the Swiss Nico Elvedi, Ramos was allowed to dock from the spot for the second time, but again Sommer saved on the captain’s weak effort. Gerard Moreno eventually equalized for Spain in the 89th minute.
The 34-year-old Ramos is only seven caps away from the world record, which is held by the Syrian Ahmed Hassan with 184 caps. Hassan put an end to his impressive international career in 2012.
Switzerland’s performances are important to Orange. The Swiss are close to the Netherlands in the FIFA rankings. The ten best European countries will receive a seeded status in the draw for the 2022 World Cup, thus avoiding the strongest opponents.

In the same group, Germany turned a deficit against Ukraine into a victory. The team of national coach Joachim Löw triumphed in the Red Bull Arena in Leipzig 3-1 against the upcoming European Championship opponent of the Dutch national team.
Ukraine took the brutal lead in the twelfth minute by a goal from Roman Yaremchuk, who left goalkeeper Manuel Neuer without a chance with a seething shot.
The answer from Germany, where PSV player Philipp Max played the entire game, was not long in coming. Leroy Sané equalized ten minutes later and Timo Werner headed in the 2-1 before half time. With his second goal of the evening, Werner determined the final score at 3-1.
Due to the victory over Ukraine and Spain’s draw, Germany has a draw against the Spaniards on Tuesday to reach the final round of the Nations League. ‘Die Mannschaft’ enters the final group match with a lead of one point.
