Real Madrid started the Champions League on Wednesday evening with a defeat. Coach Zinedine Zidane’s team surprisingly lost 2-3 at home against Shakhtar Donetsk.
Red Bull and Lokomotiv play a draw
In view of El Clásico visiting FC Barcelona on Saturday, Real started the match with a B-team in the Estadio Alfredo Di Stéfano. Karim Benzema, Toni Kroos and Isco, among others, started on the couch.
Shakhtar also had to improvise with the line-up, because seven players in the Ukrainians were struck down by COVID-19. Despite this, the visitors led 0-3 at half time.
After half an hour, Tetê opened the score with a slider in the left corner, four minutes later Raphaël Varane doubled the margin with an own goal and shortly before half-time Manor Solomon made the third goal after a nice heel from Tetê.
In the second half, Luka Modric quickly brought Real back into the game. The Croat found the goal with a beautiful long shot in the intersection. Moments later, Vinícius Júnior took care of the connection goal and in injury time ‘De Koninklijke’ seemed to grab a point, but Federico Valverde’s goal was rejected due to offside.
At 9 p.m. the other match in group B started with Internazionale-Borussia Mönchengladbach.

In group A, Red Bull Salzburg and Lokomotiv Moscow in Austria played a 2-2 draw. Dominik Szoboszlai and Zlatko Junuzovic scored with long shots on behalf of the home team, while Éder and Vitali Lisakovich scored with the head for the Russians.
The other game in this group started at 9 p.m. with Bayern Munich-Atlético Madrid.
