(Manchester United – Chelsea 0-0) Not many minutes before the break Harry Maguire took his arms around Cesar Azpilicueta in the 16-meter, but the referee let the game go on. VAR also never intervened.
And this maneuver by Harry Maguire is the big talk after the big teams played 0-0 in Manchester on Saturday night.
It was after 39 minutes that the incident took place. Given a free kick close to the byline, Harry Maguire tried a move that loyal fans may recognize from training. However, the referee was unimpressed, and booked him for diving.
– I felt it was punishment. I felt my arm around my neck. It is probably difficult for VAR to judge no or yes. I asked the judge to look at the monitor to look at the situation, but Atkinson did not want to. Why can’t you look at the screen for 20 seconds when there are 50/50 situations ?, Azpilicueta asks on the broadcast after the match.
Several have reacted on social media to the situation, and especially because VAR was connected to another situation just seconds later. Football expert on TV 2 Erik Thorstvedt was ready for his analysis during the break.
– For me, it is a clear punishment. He holds a good thank you to him. That’s just not possible in the field, Thorstvedt said in the break broadcast to TV 2.
He also received support from Simen Stamsø Møller.
– I am excited about what they (the referee in the VAR bus) say when they see it on their screen, said the football expert.
A full 32 minutes had been played before the match got its first shot on goal, but the chance was not of the big blow when Bruno Fernandes fired from 20 meters. Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy kept the shot simple.
It was also not much else to write home about for any of the teams the remaining quarter of the inning. Juan Mata also went from distance, but was stopped by Mendy, before the last chance also stopped an attempt from Marcus Rashford with a good leg parade.
The big talk of the round was therefore not goals or missed chances, but a possible penalty situation.
Solskjær again chose to reject Paul Pogba, and also had new signing Edinson Cavani on the bench.
