Kimi Raikkonen is unhappy with the performance and asks for swift intervention from the F1 team.
Kimi Raikkonen, who was finishing the Grand Prix of Great Britain in Silverstone, criticized the onboard radio. The Finn was fifteenth at the finish. He won a few positions at the start in both the sprint race as well as the GP. On Sunday afternoon he fought for a long time with Red Bull driver Sergio Perez, but Raikkonen lost all chances of a points finish after a touché with the Mexican. Raikkonen finished in points only once in the 2021 season, tenth in Azerbaijan Grand Prix. Antonio Giovinazzi, his teammate, also has one meager point.
Development of the 2021 car has been halted by the Hinwill formation since weeks. The rear wing was not modified to meet the stricter deflection test. Raikkonen was able to finish the Silverstone race without Perez colliding with him. The former world champion reacted in a characteristic way: “Maybe. Perhaps we should just make it faster. It’s simple. It is impossible to defeat them. Get on board, we need to wake up and do something.”
Once out of the car, he admitted that he was mostly defensive: “We expected it to be a tough race and it turned out to be the case. The car looked great after the start. However, I was more interested in looking in the mirrors than forward the longer we raced. We tried to fight but it wasn’t enough. Perhaps we are better off at different tracks, but hey, what can you do about that?
Alfa’s head of track engineering Xevi Pujolar acknowledges that the car is currently too slow to claim points: “If something happens up front, we’ll get close. But, we still haven’t found the right thing. We tried to be aggressive with Kimi, stop early, but we needed more speed to get close to the points.”
