Nick Viergever has been tested positive for the corona virus and is missing from PSV’s Europa League match against Omonia Nicosia on Thursday. Mario Götze has recovered from his muscle injury and is traveling to Cyprus.
The 31-year-old Viergever, who is currently in isolation, is not the only one at PSV who tested positive for the corona virus this week. A staff member of the Eindhoven residents also turned out to be infected and is not going to Cyprus.
The positive test of Viergever is a new setback for trainer Roger Schmidt, who for the same reason does not have access to Denzel Dumfries, Pablo Rosario, Timo Baumgartl, Cody Gakpo, Joël Piroe and Maxime Delanghe. That six was also missing from the selection for the game with Vitesse (2-1 loss) in the Eredivisie on Sunday.
Due to the absence of Viergever, only four defenders are in PSV’s selection for the match against Omonia Nicosia: Olivier Boscagli, Philipp Max, Luis Felipe and Jordan Teze. Midfielder Mauro Júnior played against Vitesse as a fullback.
The return of Götze is offset by Viergever’s absence. The German midfielder could not participate against Vitesse last Sunday due to a muscle injury, but is now part of Schmidt’s selection again.
The match between Omonia Nicosia and PSV starts on Thursday at 9 p.m. The team from Eindhoven went down 1-2 against Granada in their first group match and are scoreless at the bottom of group E.
Full PSV selection: Mvogo, Unnerstall, Müller; Boscagli, Max, Luis Felipe, Teze; Sangaré, Hendrix, Ihattaren, Fein, Mauro Júnior, Götze, Thomas, Kjølø, Ledezma; Zahavi, Malen, Madueke and Saibari.
