PSV started the season in the Eredivisie with a victory on Sunday. The team of the new trainer Roger Schmidt won 1-3 on a visit to FC Groningen, where Arjen Robben was injured on his official return as a professional football player.
PSV immediately takes initiative in Groningen
PSV took a 0-1 lead in the 33rd minute by a goal from Cody Gakpo. FC Groningen surprisingly balanced the score in the 53rd minute thanks to a goal by Tomás Suslov, but PSV eventually won the end due to goals from Donyell Malen and again Gakpo.
Robben had to be changed after half an hour. It is not yet known what is bothering him, but he seemed to reach for his groin after an innocent collision with Pablo Rosario. He immediately left for the dressing room disappointed.
The routine ended his career last year and announced his return at the end of June. He also struggled with some aches and pains in the preparation, so he only participated in two exhibition games, but scored against Arminia Bielefeld last week.

Without bank seeker Mohamed Ihattaren and with Sam Lammers, who would like to leave for Atalanta, PSV immediately took the initiative against FC Groningen. The Eindhoven team should also have scored after more than five minutes, but Malen and Mauro Júnior encountered the excellent goalkeeper Sergio Padt from close by.
After that it was a long wait for the next big opportunity for PSV, which did not have to fear for a tame FC Groningen. It was immediately hit after Robben’s failure. After a good play-in pass from Pablo Rosario, Gakpo turned away from his direct opponent and outwitted Padt with a watchful slider.
PSV seemed to be heading for a simple evening, but the visitors simply gave the equalizer as a gift shortly after the break. Substitute Jorrit Hendrix, who was cold in the field, lost the ball after an unfortunate pass from the new goalkeeper Yvon Mvogo to Suslov, who simply tapped the ball in.

PSV was not really shocked because a few minutes after the 1-1 it was already 1-2. Malen was perfectly released by Noni Madueke, who also came in, and pushed the ball neatly under the outgoing Padt, thus repairing the damage very quickly.
PSV stayed on track in the last half hour. The visitors escaped once when Jordan Teze took a bicycle kick from Suslov off the goal line, but FC Groningen did not get further than that.
