PSV booked a simple victory against ADO Den Haag on Sunday, despite the many absences due to infections with the corona virus. The Eindhoven club was 4-0 too strong for the residents of The Hague in the Philips Stadium.

PSV receives a questionable penalty

Halfway through, PSV led 1-0 through a striking penalty from Eran Zahavi and after the break, the team of trainer Roger Schmidt ran further against the very weak ADO. Noni Madueke, Ryan Thomas and again Madueke took care of the 4-0 final score.

With the big win, PSV closed a hectic week, in which many players tested positive for corona. Just before the home game against ADO, Jorrit Hendrix and reserve keeper Vincent Müller fell away due to the virus. They joined in a row with Denzel Dumfries, Cody Gakpo, Pablo Rosario, Joël Piroe, Maxime Delanghe, Timo Baumgartl and Nick Viergever.

PSV is now in third place in the Eredivisie, two points behind Ajax and Vitesse. Next Thursday, the club will continue the Europa League adventure with an away match against PAOK. ADO occupies fifteenth place with four points and again seems to be condemned to a battle against relegation.

Due to the long list of absentees, Schmidt had to be creative with his position against ADO. Ryan Thomas played as right back, newcomer Adrian Fein had a starting place and Eran Zahavi wore the captain’s armband.

The occasional line-up was good enough to beat ADO, although that was also because the away team created almost nothing. PSV had a predominance and after fifteen minutes there was also a lead. It was a debatable goal, as ADO defender Lassane Faye didn’t seem to hit Zahavi when the experienced striker went down, but referee Jochem Kamphuis pointed to the spot anyway. Zahavi himself got behind the ball and made no mistake.

In the remainder of the first half, PSV got chances for a bigger lead through, among others, Mohamed Ihattaren and Donyell Malen, but that was not forthcoming.

After that the score went up further. Madueke was played by Zahavi in the 51st minute and the young Englishman beat ADO keeper Luuk Koopmans with a well placed shot. After his 2-0 Madueke looked for the camera to show support for Thijs Slegers, the PSV press secretary who heard this week that he has acute leukemia.

With the 2-0, the game was decided and that offered Schmidt the opportunity to let twenty-year-old American Richard Ledezma make his debut, after nineteen-year-old Spaniard Ismael Saibari was also allowed to come in.
