PSV suffered an expensive defeat in the Women’s Eredivisie on Sunday. The Eindhoven team lost the top match when visiting number three FC Twente 3-2 and are now six points behind leader Ajax.
Beerensteyn wint met Bayern Munich
PSV still took the lead after twelve minutes of play. Top scorer Joëlle Smits managed to hit the target after a long ball from Aniek Nouwen. Renate Jansen signed for 1-1 after half an hour by curling the ball from the edge of the penalty area into the far corner.
FC Twente also took the lead nine minutes later. Anna-Lena Stolze was found somewhat lucky and pushed the ball coolly past keeper Sari van Veenendaal. Twente could not enjoy the lead for long, because Smits made her second of the afternoon with a viewed shot: 2-2 before half-time.
The first half in Enschede was marred with an apparently serious injury for Elena Dhont. The 22-year-old attacker twisted her knee and was carried off the field by stretcher. Teammate Kika van Es was inconsolable for a few minutes.
After the break, the home team still won the three points. Fenna Kalma tapped the ball from close range behind Van Veenendaal in the 54th minute after a low cross from the right by Bente Jansen.
In Germany, leader Bayern Munich recorded a 4-1 victory over number two VfL Wolfsburg. Bayern striker Lineth Beerensteyn signed for the 3-0 and Wolfsburg defender Dominique Janssen determined the final score with an own goal.
Arsenal did not get further than 1-1 against Chelsea in the Women’s Super League. ‘The Gunners’, with Vivianne Miedema and Jill Roord in the base and Daniëlle van de Donk on the bench, had taken the lead from Manchester United with a victory. Bethany Mead put Arsenal 1-0 just before time, but Carlotte Wubben-Moy scored an own goal in extra time: 1-1.
