Trainer Arne Slot fully enjoyed the way AZ approached the away game against sc Heerenveen on Sunday. The Alkmaarders booked a surprisingly simple victory in the Abe Lenstra Stadium (0-3).
‘This performance is better than usual’
“In the four years that I have been with AZ, this was perhaps our best game”, Slot said in conversation with FOX Sports. “We have already played many good matches this season. But it is nice to see that we can be dominant against such a strong opponent as Heerenveen.”
AZ already led 0-2 at half time through a penalty kick from Teun Koopmeiners and an own goal from Lucas Woudenberg, after which Jesper Karlsson decided the game in the 47th minute. The simple victory is a boost for Slot’s team after a fairly hopeless defeat against Real Sociedad (1-0) in the Europa League last Thursday.
“In recent days we have paid a lot of attention to the intensity with which Real Sociedad played us on Thursday,” said Slot. “With Heerenveen there was another team on the field with blue and white shirts, but luckily this time it was the team with red shirts that brought the intensity.”

Due to the victory, the changeable AZ seems to have definitely started the way up. After a number of bizarre draws, the title candidate of last season also easily beat RKC Waalwijk (3-0) at home last week.
“This performance against Heerenveen is better than usual, because we played an away game in Europe on Thursday that was quite tough physically and mentally”, Slot emphasized. “When three days later you are able to be that good, also on the ball, that says a lot about the fitness of the players who were on the field.”
Despite the advance of AZ, the gap on the leader Ajax is no less than ten points, although the Alkmaarders still have a match credit. “You hope that the top teams will still drop stitches, but for example Ajax wins its matches very easily. We have fallen behind enormously.”
