These were special times for judoka Kim Polling. For example, she spent the past three months in home quarantine with her Italian friend Andrea Regis, who is also a top judoka.
That in itself is not very exciting, but Polling lives in Northern Italy, the place where the corona pandemic got a foothold in Europe.
“I did not feel unsafe for a moment,” says the 29-year-old judoka about the past period. Polling wanted to be home because she can train well with her boyfriend there.
At the judo union they initially thought that was not such a good idea. While everyone wanted to flee Northern Italy, Polling went there. “They first thought, ‘why did she leave?’ That turned to: “Kim is doing the best for everyone at the moment”. “
Polling doesn’t think there will be changes anytime soon and she can only train with her boyfriend for the time being. It does ensure that she can shift her attention to other things.
“I can’t imagine that we are going to do tournaments before there is a vaccine. That is very aimless, so I am now mainly focusing on learning Italian.”
