Jim Ryan, the director of PlayStation, expects it will be years before virtual reality (VR) is a worthy part of the entertainment world. “I think the future of VR will take a while,” he says in conversation with The Washington Post.

“PlayStation believes in VR. Sony believes in VR, and we firmly believe that VR will one day be a worthy aspect of interactive entertainment,” said Ryan. “Will it be this year? No. Will it be next year? No. But will the point ever come? We believe that.”

Sony took its first steps in the field of virtual reality in 2016 with the introduction of the PlayStation VR (PSVR). The VR glasses, which work with the PlayStation 4, competed mainly with the HTC Vive and the Oculus Rift at the time.

Against The Washington Post Ryan says PlayStation has plans for an adapter with which PSVR can also be used on the PlayStation 5. The new game console from Sony will be released in November. Sony has not yet disclosed any plans to release a separate VR headset for the PS5.

“We are very pleased with the experience we have gained with PlayStation VR,” Ryan told the newspaper. “We look forward to seeing where that takes us in the future.”
