The accident occurred after the Air India Express aircraft slipped from the runway in torrential rain, around 7.40 pm local time (15.40, Romanian time) and fell into a valley. The airport is located in a high area. India is facing floods and landslides due to the monsoon season.
Rescue operations are in progress. The front of the five-seater plane was badly damaged and it is unlikely that passengers in that area survived. At least five people died and about 40 people were taken to hospital.
The first to help the rescue efforts were the locals. Authorities mobilized fire and intervention teams from two districts.
There were 184 passengers and seven crew members on board. The co-pilot of the plane is in serious condition, according to India TV. Among the passengers are 10 children.
The aircraft hit the runway at high speed and therefore overtook the runway. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) of India stated that the ship had “a visibility of two thousand meters in heavy rain” and “continued to run until the end of the runway, fell into the valley and broke in two. pieces ”.
Former Indian Tourism Minister KJ Alphons wrote on Twitter: “The second tragedy of the day in Kerala: Air India Express left the runway at Kozhikode, the front part came off, the pilot died and many passengers are injured . All passengers were evacuated. Good luck that the aircraft did not catch fire. “
