Gerard Piqué (33) was greeted with enthusiasm by his teammates during Barcelona’s training on Friday.
The reason was an interview in the newspaper where he took a hard line against the club management, among other things for how they have treated Lionel Messi. Piqué called for naming the new Camp Nou after the little Argentine.
– As president, I would have acted differently, Gerard Piqué said about club president Josep Maria Bartomeu’s treatment of Messi.
– I asked Leo to stay. I did not have much to do with him at that time, because I thought it was a very personal decision. But I remember saying “in a year, there will be new people leading this club.”
– I ask myself how it can be possible that the best player in history, who we have had the holy luck to enjoy, gets up one day and sends a fax to the club where he asks to leave FC Barcelona, because he feel that they do not listen to him?
– It’s shocking. What’s up? Leo deserves everything. The new stadium should be named after him, then after the sponsor. We must take care of our legends, not mock them, Piqué said in the interview with La Vanguardia.
It was at the end of August that it became known that Messi had sent a message to FC Barcelona asking to leave the club. The Argentine star’s contract initially expires on June 30, 2021, but it was a clause that gave Messi the opportunity to leave the club at the end of each season. But it had to be triggered on June 1. Messi had not done so, but he and the agent thought it should be possible because the corona pandemic made the season completely different normally.
After many days of tug of war, it ended up that Messi must stay in Barcelona until the end of his contract.
Gerard Piqué stated otherwise on Friday:
