Alex Albon’s results this season are far from what the Red Bull Racing management expected, and although the team has repeatedly expressed support for the young driver in words, the likelihood that the British of Thai descent will retain his place next year is rapidly diminishing.
According to the Italian La Gazzetta dello Sport, Red Bull Racing is seriously considering the candidacies of Sergio Perez and Nico Hulkenberg to replace Alex Elbon in 2021. At the same time, the return of Pierre Gasly is not considered, since Dietrich Mateschitz has big plans for AlphaTauri and does not want to deprive the team of the leader.
It is uncommon for Red Bull Racing to invite riders outside of its youth program, but at the moment it does not have the right pupils to replace Elbon. The publication believes that of the two candidates, Sergio Perez has the greatest chances. Over the years in Formula 1, the Mexican has established himself as a fast and stable driver. In addition, he will bring along with him major sponsors who will allow Mateshitsu to at least partially reduce the financial investment in the team.
However, the option of inviting Niko Hulkenberg to Red Bull Racing is not abandoned, since the German market is important for the Austrian energy drink manufacturer. One way or another, but almost certainly next year, Max Verstappen will have a new partner who will help him in the fight against Mercedes drivers.
