Ajax is deeply saddened by the death of Tonny Bruins Slot on Sunday, who made analyzes for trainer Erik ten Hag until the last weeks before his death. The ‘master scout’, who turned 73 years old, had been ill for some time.
‘He looked at football differently’
“The last analysis he made for Erik ten Hag and his staff was of Liverpool, but up to last week’s Atalanta he kept sending messages with tips and directions,” said director of football affairs Marc Overmars on Monday. website from Ajax.
“Even though things were not going so well for him and he had been working more and more from home for months, also due to corona of course, he continued to work for us.”
Ajax runs like a thread through the career of Bruins Slot, who for years was Johan Cruijff’s right-hand man at the Amsterdam club and then also at Barcelona. He was also assistant to Ronald Koeman in his time as a trainer in the ArenA and was appointed Member of Merit by Ajax in January 2019.
“He was very popular with all of us here at Ajax”, says Overmars. “Even though Tonny was ill for some time, we are still very shocked at the club now that he has passed away.”
On the side of Ronald Koeman, Bruins Slot also worked for Benfica, PSV, Valencia and AZ, after which he returned to Ajax in 2011 to help the trainers with his famous analysis of opponents.
“He devoted himself fully to every trainer with whom he has worked at Ajax”, says Overmars. “Everything for the success of our first team; Tonny gave directions and tips down to the smallest details. He viewed football differently than most people around us, often referring to his years with Johan Cruijff.”
According to Overmars, Bruins Slot had a “cruijffian slant of thinking”. “It makes sense that they have worked together for so much and so long. And that gave him a different perspective on scouting and analysis. We will miss him.”
Koeman has also responded to the death of Bruins Slot. “A real football player, but above all a beautiful person”, the FC Barcelona coach writes Twitter. “I got to know Tonny well when we achieved wonderful successes in Barcelona, Tonny as Johan’s assistant, I as a player.”
“In my coaching career I have had the privilege of having Tonny next to me as a loyal and extremely skilled trainer at Ajax, Benfica, PSV, Valencia and AZ. Rest in peace, my friend.”
