Prominent Venezuelan opposition politician Leopoldo López arrived in the Spanish capital Madrid on Sunday, the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced in a statement.

López led the advance of opposition leader Juan Guaidó

López fled his country on Saturday and moved to Colombia. He went to Spain from that country. “Leopoldo López arrived in Madrid today to reunite with his family,” the ministry said in the statement.

The opposition member spent the past year in the residence of the Spanish ambassador in the Venezuelan capital of Caracas to escape house arrest. On Saturday his father confirmed that he was on his way to Spain. “I can confirm that he left the embassy of his own free will and secretly left Venezuela,” he said.

The Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed on Sunday that López’s decision to leave the embassy was “personal and voluntary”.

López was sentenced to almost fourteen years in prison in 2014 for, among other things, inciting violence against President Nicolás Maduro’s regime. In 2017, López was released on parole, after which he supported the advance of opposition leader Juan Guaidó. He has declared himself interim president, with the support of many Western countries.

After the advance, López took shelter in Chile’s diplomatic residence. Later he left for the residence of the Spanish ambassador.

López’s wife has been living in Spain with their three children since June last year, just like his father. Many other Venezuelans have also fled the repressive Venezuelan regime.
