The opening match of the new season in the Eredivisie between FC Utrecht and AZ has been postponed on Monday evening. The game will be moved so that the Alkmaarders have more time to prepare for the meeting with Dynamo Kiev in the third qualifying round of the Champions League.
Heerenveen and Willem II are now kicking off the season
The match between FC Utrecht and AZ would be scheduled on Saturday at 4.30 pm. Next Tuesday, the team of coach Arne Slot in Ukraine will play against Dynamo Kiev. The winner of that meeting qualifies for the play-offs of the Champions League.
Due to the short time between the two games and the trip to Ukraine, AZ decided to submit a request to the KNVB to move the game in Stadium Galgenwaard. That was honored by the KNVB.
“It is a difficult decision, because we understand that this is annoying for the supporters and for FC Utrecht in such a short term”, the association explains on the website.
“We have granted AZ’s request because, in the context of the change agenda, we jointly decided with all clubs two years ago to give European playing clubs as much priority as possible. The entire Dutch football benefits from successes in the Champions League and Europa League. . “
It is still unknown on what date the game between FC Utrecht and AZ will be played. Due to the relocation, sc Heerenveen and Willem II kick off the new Eredivisie season. That match starts next Saturday at 6.45 pm in the Abe Lenstra Stadium.
For AZ, the competition now starts on Saturday, September 19 with a home game against PEC Zwolle. The day before FC Utrecht will play its first match at VVV-Venlo.
