Memphis Depay (26) was a flop in Manchester United – but should be wanted by both Barcelona and AS Roma.
At least that is what Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas claims. He stated this in the French “Telefoot” this weekend, reproduced by.
“Barcelona is not the only club, so is Rome,” said the Lyon president. The clubs have not commented on the statement.
Memphis Depay contributed to the Netherlands’ 1-0 victory over Poland on Friday, and on Monday night there is a new Nations League match at Johan Cruijff ArenA – this time against Italy.
Manchester United pocketed just over NOK 250 million for Mempis in 2015. One and a half years later, the wing was sold to Lyon after being icy cold under José Mourinho in the autumn of 2016.
After a small start, it exploded in Lyon, and now there are only nine months left of the Dutchman’s contract with the French club. He has during this time scored 46 times in Ligue 1 and 57 times in total.
Lyon coach Rudi Garcia would of course prefer to keep Memphis, but has expressed understanding if he disappears to a club that can win the Champions League.
“Then I will personally drive him there with my car,” Garcia told Telefoot.
The newspaper Telegraaf emphasizes that in Barcelona he will meet his former national team manager Ronald Koeman, as well as Frenkie de Jong, while Justin Kluivert plays in AS Roma, which was number five in Serie A this season and must settle for the Europa League.
