This severe mental illness appears later in women than in men and can be disguised as hormonal imbalance, stress or mood swings. Schizophrenia cannot be cured, but the attentive attitude of loved ones and timely therapy can help get rid of severe manifestations of the disease and relieve many symptoms.

Schizophrenia is a severe mental disorder that manifests itself in the breakdown of thought processes, perception, and emotional reactions. According to the large-scale researchconducted in 1999 in 14 countries by an international group of scientists, the state of active psychosis is one of the three diseases leading to disability.

The causes and mechanisms of the development of schizophrenia still remain a mystery to psychiatrists and neuroscientists, but at least the factors influencing the onset of the disease are known: genetic predisposition, violence suffered in early childhood, impaired brain function and even pregnancy. It is also known that this disease is more often affected in cities than in rural areas. Psychoanalyst George Devereaux called schizophrenia “ethnic psychosis of the Western world.”

Schizophrenia is diagnosed with the same frequency in both men and women, with the difference that in the latter the disease manifests itself at a later age: from 26 to 32 years (in men from 20 to 28 years). The first signs of schizophrenia in a girl are quite difficult to recognize, since any of them can be easily attributed to harmless reasons – premenstrual syndrome, problems with the opposite sex, stress. Doctors identify several symptoms that can be harbingers of the first attack:

  • Increased irritability;
  • Gloomy mood, dislike for others;
  • Anhedonia – loss of the ability to enjoy those activities that used to bring joy;
  • Sharpening character traits.
  • Concentration problems;
  • Decreased need for contact with people, tendency to privacy.

It is important that all of these signs increase gradually over the course of two years. After them, more serious symptoms characteristic of female schizophrenia appear.

  • Short-term delusional thoughts;
  • Fragmentary hallucinations, both visual and auditory – the girl is constantly “imagining something”;
  • Hypochondria and suspicion;
  • Untidiness, untidiness.

All attempts by others to point out all these oddities are perceived with aggression – a girl suffering from schizophrenia does not realize that her behavior is abnormal and withdraws into herself even more, refusing to communicate. However, at this stage it is especially important to convince her to be examined, since timely therapy can get rid of more serious manifestations of schizophrenia – hallucinations, paranoid ideas, delirium, severe exacerbations in spring and autumn.

It is important to remember that a woman with schizophrenia takes the reality she sees very seriously, does not invent it or pretend it. It is the careful support of loved ones that can help her avoid the progression of the disease, since modern methods of treatment allow people with schizophrenia to live an almost full life.
