Wout Weghorst took a big setback on Thursday with VfL Wolfsburg. The Bundesliga club lost 2-1 to AEK in the last minute and thus missed out on Europa League football. Steven Bergwijn contributed with two assists to Tottenham Hotspur’s 7-2 win over Maccabi Haifa.
Loss of Basel, Copenhagen and Sporting good news for PSV
With Weghorst as the basic player, Wolfsburg took the lead through Admir Mehmedi just before half time, but after half time things went wrong. After André Simões’s equalizer, it was Karim Ansarifard who made the decision in the final minute.
At Tottenham-Maccabi Haifa, basic player Bergwijn was the principal at Lucas Moura’s 2-1 and Harry Kane’s 6-2, who thus completed his hat-trick. Giovani Lo Celso scored twice and the seventh goal was made by Dele Alli.
Tjaronn Chery, former player of ADO Den Haag and FC Groningen, had scored the equalizer in London after an early opening goal by Kane.

FC Basel (1-3 against CSKA Sofia), FC Copenhagen (0-1 against HNK Rijeka) and Sporting CP (1-4 against LASK) also lost quite surprisingly in the play-offs, which is good news for PSV.
The results mean that the Eindhoven team will be in pot 1 on Friday in the draw for the group stage of the Europa League. They thus avoid clubs such as Arsenal, AS Roma, Napoli, Benfica and Bayer Leverkusen.
In addition, AC Milan, among others, which played without the corona virus infected Zlatan Ibrahimovic, survived the play-offs. The Italians had to go deep: after a 2-2 draw at Rio Ave, the penalty series was won 9-8.
The draw for the group stage of the Europa League, which will include AZ and Feyenoord in addition to PSV, starts on Friday at 1 p.m.
