The time may have passed when you disinfected every package you brought home or every product from the supermarket. However, there is an area that hosts the coronavirus for four times longer than the flu.
The SARS-CoV-2 virus is four times more resistant to the skin than the influenza A virus. This is the result of a study by researchers at the Japanese University of Kyoto. The good part is that both viruses are eliminated by disinfectants with 80% alcohol. As a reference, most commercial disinfectants gravitate around 80% alcohol content, but it is a value that you should keep in case of a future purchase.
Beyond the details of disinfection, the researchers’ conclusion is very clear and worrying. SARS-CoV-2 survives for up to nine hours on human skin without any intervention from you. For this analysis, scientists at Kyoto University took samples from several corpses and made a comparison with influenza A virus samples.
The results of the study, published in the journal Clinical Inectious Disease, show that SARS-CoV-2 has a much higher stability on human skin than influenza A virus. In the end, however, another detail is more important than the actual diagnosis. Both viruses were destroyed in 15 seconds by hand sanitizers, which contain 80% alcohol. In other words, it is important to develop the habit of washing your hands often, but especially when you come in contact with other people, try to have disinfectant with you.
“Perhaps the most important aspect of this study is that it highlights once again the importance of using alcohol-based disinfectant solutions. This result shows a much higher resistance of the SARS-Cov-2 virus in the external environment, than of the influenza A virus. Probably its structure has certain particularities that give it resistance “, said the infectious disease doctor Anamaria Dobrotă.
