Vicky Eatrides has recently taken over the role of chair of the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC). Her first priority appears to be the mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) regime. Eatrides is looking to get telecom providers to inform the commission of updated negotiations regarding the MVNO framework. The framework requires network infrastructure and spectrum investment from regional providers to gain access.
Eatrides is also focusing on internet pricing. She believes the current model is not working and wants to come up with a better one. The commission previously said internet rates needed to be lowered and introduced a proposal to do so, but later backtracked due to errors.
Eatrides has taken over the role from Ian Scott and is looking to make a positive impact on the telecom industry in Canada. She has expressed her desire to keep up with the negotiations between the larger players and regional providers regarding the MVNO framework and to come up with a better model for internet pricing. It is yet to be seen how her efforts will shape the telecom industry in Canada.
