“Mank”, played by Gary Oldman, is a portrait of Herman Mankiewicz, screenwriter of the film directed and starring Orson Welles in 1941, a film classic.

About to be fulfilled 80 years since the premiere of El Ciudadano (in 2021), Netflix prepares the launch of Mank. The film tells the story of Herman Mankiewicz, screenwriter of that classic directed and starred by Orson waves, considerate one of the most important in the history of cinema.

The cast is led by Gary Oldman as Herman Mankiewicz and Tom Burke, who plays Orson Welles, led by David Fincher.

Netflix has it ready to premiere before the end of the year: it is a biographical drama that the director has been working on for a long time, and with a script that carries its own emotional flavor: it was written by his father, Jack Fincher, now deceased.

The story is focused on the screenwriter Herman Mankiewicz, a surname closely linked to Hollywood, since his brother, director John Mankiewicz, was also well known at the time.

The Citizen (Citizen Kane, in the original in English), was released in 1941 and is considered one of the most iconic films of all time, by his innovation in music, photography and narrative structure.

It was about the first work by director Orson Welles, who also played the main character, Charles Foster Kane. On the other hand, the Oscar that this original screenplay won was the only one in the legendary Welles’ career, except for an honorary one that he received many years later.

Although the script was written jointly by Welles and Mankiewicz, the reality is that the latter was responsible for shaping the story of the press mogul William Randolph Hearst, and Welles himself, real characters on which it was based. the plot.

In Mank, Mankiewicz’s role is being played by Gary Oldman, playing a man who had to deal with his own ghosts and against alcoholism.

Mankiewicz was recognized as one of Hollywood’s most legendary screenwriters, cultivator of a very particular sense of humor, rather acid, that brought him some problems with the most important and powerful producers of the time, whom he openly confronted on more than one occasion.

Although his most recognized work was for The citizen, Mankiewicz is also the author of other film classics, such as Gentlemen prefer blondes, where Marilyn Monroe acted, and many other films starring the Marx brothers.

The film that Netflix will premiere reflects, through this character, much of the behind the scenes of a golden age Hollywood, but also its rawness as a fierce machinery to treat many of its stars, such as Mankiewicz.

The screenwriter went through several detox clinics throughout his life, where he even wrote some of his scripts.

Along with Goldman and Burke, they also act in Mank Amanda Seyfried, como la actriz Marion Davies, Lily Collins, Tuppence Middleton, Charles Dance y Tom Pelphrey.

The director surrounded himself with a team that regularly accompanies him on his projects, such as cinematographer Erik Messerschmidt, and composers Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross.

The filming was very demanding, to try to reproduce as accurately as possible this masterpiece of cinema and its context. And so, many of the scenes were repeated up to 200 times, until leaving according to the director.

The film is in black and white, precisely to reconstruct with great fidelity the climate of the time, the 30s, and that it really looks like a movie from that decade, but with the current quality and technology.
