This weekend in Mugello, under the auspices of the FIA, negotiations are underway between representatives of the European Formula Regional and the organizers of the Eurocup Formula Renault, and they are dedicated to the creation of a single youth championship of the continent on the basis of these two series.
In 2018, the FIA held a tender to decide who would be eligible to host the European Formula Regional Championship, and ultimately entrusted to Italian promoters ACI Sport and WSK Promotion. However, in 2019 it turned out that there were not so many people willing to perform in the new series.
At the same time, Renault Sport has modernized its traditional Formula Renault Eurocup, now it uses Formula Regional cars that meet the technical requirements of the usual Formula 3, and for two seasons in a row the starting field there is much better equipped. One problem: starting in 2020 for winning this series, the FIA awards much fewer points for the super license than in the European Formula Regional.
The goal of the talks in Mugello is to discuss the possibility of creating a single European Formula 3 Regional based on these two series, the first season of which may take place as early as 2021. There is no information about the course of the negotiations and whether any decisions were made.
By the way, today the Formula Regional race in Mugello was won by Arthur Leclair, brother of Charles, the Ferrari driver, which allowed him to lead the individual classification of the series.
