The Foreign Ministers of Armenia and Azerbaijan will meet this Friday in Moscow thanks to the mediation exercised by Russian President Vladimir Putin, with a view to resolve the conflict around Nagorno Karabakh, where the resumption of fighting on September 27 has already left dozens of deaths.

“Baku and Yerevan have confirmed their participation in the Moscow consultations. There are intense preparations “, reported the spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, María Zajarova.

The invitation to the meeting in the Russian capital had been Putin himself formulated the day before, after speaking by phone with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinian.

The Russian president reiterated his appeal “to a cessation of hostilities” in Nagorno Karabakh “for humanitarian reasons in order to carry out an exchange of deceased and prisoners”.

For now, Armenia has already confirmed that its Foreign Minister, Zograb Mnatsakanian, will attend the meeting. In a message on Twitter, the Armenian government has reported that its head of diplomacy is already traveling to Moscow. “The agenda will focus exclusively on the cessation of hostilities and humanitarian issues exchange of deceased and prisoners of war, “he pointed out.

Azerbaijan has also confirmed the attendance of its minister, Jeihun Bairamov, for “a work visit” to Moscow, according to sources from his Ministry cited by the Trend agency.

Aliyev has been reluctant to enter into a dialogue, demanding that Armenia previously commit to the withdrawal of its troops from Nagorno Karabakh, a region with an Armenian majority but officially Azerbaijani that proclaimed its independence and has the support of Yerevan.

As it is, the fighting has continued unabated since September 27. The Azerbaijani attorney general’s office denounced this Friday that 31 civilians have died and 164 have been injured by the actions of the Armenian troops and Nagorno Karabakh. In addition, more than a thousand houses have been seriously damaged.
