:
MLSE Digital Labs and Amazon Web Services have partnered to launch SportsX, a new research and development program to introduce AR and VR technology to change the way we consume professional sports. This program has its first initiative in the form of the Immersive Basketball Experience, which allows viewers to immerse themselves into the action of a 3D rendering of an NBA game. This technology uses a mix of optical tracking body pose data, 3D models, and a video game development engine to create a life-sized way to relive the game. For NHL games, the experience can be even more realistic due to the use of infrared technology that’s embedded in the pucks and in players’ jerseys, which is relayed to an AWS outpost. This technology allows for the tracking of each movement part of the game, making way for the “Extended Reality Stats Overlay” feature on an AR or VR headset.
The technology can be used both to enhance the fan experience and to help enhance team performance, as players and coaches can relive moments to help with their training. The cost of the headsets remains a challenge to make it accessible to a mass group of people, but with innovations such as Apple’s augmented reality glasses, this technology should become more accessible. MLSE and AWS also want to use this technology to get communities involved and to give fans the ability to test out the technology themselves.
SportsX is an innovative program that will change the way we consume sports. With the use of AR and VR technology, viewers can immerse themselves into the action of a game and even receive real-time stats as part of their viewpoint. This technology also allows players and coaches to relive pivotal moments to help with their training. The cost of the headsets is currently a challenge to make the technology accessible to a mass group of people, but with new innovations, this should change in the coming years. MLSE and AWS also want to use this technology to get communities involved and to give fans the ability to test out the technology themselves. This program is a great example of how technology can be used to help enhance the fan experience and to help athletes and coaches improve their performance.
