Former Vice President Mike Pence has expressed his reluctance to see former President Donald Trump indicted, calling any such action “politically charged” and not in line with the wishes of American citizens. Speaking to ABC’s Jon Karl during a taped interview on Saturday, Pence defended peaceful protests that may arise at Trump’s request while condemning the violent events that occurred at the US Capitol on January 6th. He believes Americans have a constitutional right to assemble peacefully but also acknowledges their frustration over what they perceive as an unequal justice system.
Pence’s comments reflect his efforts to balance criticism and support for his former boss amid mounting expectations that he will run for Republican presidential nomination. At last week’s Gridiron Club dinner in Washington DC, he issued scathing remarks about Trump’s role in inciting violence against Congress: “President Trump was wrong…his reckless words endangered my family and everyone at the Capitol.”
