Microsoft invests in OpenAI, ChatGPT and AI research.
Microsoft has announced a multi-year, multi-billion dollar investment in OpenAI, the company behind the highly acclaimed AI-powered chatbot ChatGPT. Microsoft’s investment follows two other investments in 2019 and 2021, and is thought to be worth around $10 billion. The investment is set to help OpenAI with their research and supercomputing, as well as enable them to independently commercialize the resulting advanced AI technologies. Microsoft also plans to use OpenAI’s models across their consumer and enterprise products, as well as incorporate new digital experiences based on OpenAI’s technology.
Satya Nadella, Microsoft’s chief, said the partnership with OpenAI is to “responsibly advance cutting-edge AI research and democratize AI as a new technology platform”. OpenAI boss Sam Altman added that the three-year partnership has been “great” and that OpenAI is excited to continue their independent research.
ChatGPT has been praised for its ability to respond to human prompts in a natural and creative way, and has the potential to transform society in ways perhaps even more dramatically than Amazon and the iPhone. However, there are some who don’t rate ChatGPT, such as Yann LeCun, Meta’s chief AI scientist, who recently described the tool as “not particularly innovative”.
Microsoft’s investment in OpenAI is sure to help them to continue their work on AI technology and research, and will enable them to create advanced AI that benefits everyone. Although there may be some risks associated with such powerful advancement, the potential benefits of OpenAI’s AI-powered chatbot ChatGPT cannot be ignored.
