Mexico reported this Thursday 576 new deaths due to the COVID-19 pandemic, bringing the number of fatalities to 100.104 in the country, informed authorities of the Ministry of Health.

In addition, in the last 24 hours, 4,472 new infections, for a total of 1,019,543 cases confirmed.

With these figures, Mexico is the eleventh country with the most infections and the room with the most deaths, according to Johns Hopkins University.

“Today in Mexico we have 100,000 deaths from covid-19, this is an unusual number, Mexican society had no prior antecedent of an infectious, acute disease that could cause such a rapid spread and affect the lives of so many people, “said the undersecretary of Prevention and Health Promotion, Hugo López-Gatell, strategist against the pandemic in the daily press conference.

López-Gatell recalled that the causes of death had been dominated by non-communicable diseases, in addition to homicides, suicides, traffic accidents and those at home.

Fourth cause of death

In the eight and a half months of the pandemic in Mexico, which began on February 28, COVID-19 has established itself as the fourth cause of death in the country, behind heart disease, diabetes and tumors malignant, according to data from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi).

The official data of the pandemic in Mexico have generated controversy since its inception since the health authorities have ruled out mass testing the population and have focused on preparing hospitals for severe cases.

The daily technical report of the pandemic confirmed increases of 0.57% in deaths and 0.43% in infections, in contrast to the figures of the previous day, when there were 99,528 deaths and 1,015,071 cases.

Since the beginning of the pandemic in Mexico, 2,649,000 patients who had a 42% positivity rate, reported the Director of Epidemiology of the Ministry of Health, José Luis Alomía, at a press conference at the National Palace.

Suspicious cases

Among the group of patients studied there are 1,019,543 who had a positive for the viral infection, 1,244,739 with a negative result, and 384,718 who remain as suspected cases.

Suspected cases are classified by health authorities among those who do not have a sample (191,016), those who have no possibility of having a result (119,568) and those who wait to know the diagnosis of their test (74,134).

The official highlighted that 766.361 patients are classified as recovered people.

The projections of the Mexican authorities indicate that there are currently 1,180.92 estimated cases and they indicated that 3% of the estimated cases, which correspond to 37,473, are those that represent the active epidemic in the country, being patients who developed their symptoms in the last 14 days.

Alomy noted that health authorities currently have 15,483 suspicious deaths which are classified as those that do not have a sample (10,647), those that will not have a diagnosis (4,283) and those that can (553).

So far 10 entities of the country accumulate 62% of deaths from coronavirus and Mexico City, by itself, register 16% of all at the national level.
