Memphis Depay is still very disappointed that captain Virgil van Dijk is not available for the Dutch national team for the time being. The players of Orange reported for the first time on Monday since the defender sustained his serious knee injury.
Van Dijk was torpedoed last month during Everton-Liverpool by Everton keeper Jordan Pickford. He sustained considerable internal damage to his knee, had to undergo an operation and is on the sidelines for months.
“It is very disappointing. It hurts the whole team, everyone around him and of course the most for himself,” Memphis said in Zeist on Monday in front of the camera. FOX Sports.
The attacker of Olympique Lyon has just returned from a serious knee injury and therefore knows what Van Dijk is going through. “We can only really support him. I’ve been on the same path, so I know what it feels like. I’m here for him.”
Memphis still doesn’t understand Pickford’s action. “When I saw the violation, I used some words that I’m not going to repeat. It’s bizarre how you can injure someone like that. I’ll leave it at that.”
The Dutch national team will play an exhibition match against Spain in the Johan Cruijff ArenA on Wednesday (kick-off: 8.45 p.m.). The Nations League game with Bosnia and Herzegovina will follow on Sunday, also in Amsterdam. Next Wednesday, the same tournament will be played in and against Poland.
