Marvel’s Avengers game ending, Spider-Man exclusive to PS4/PS5, no agreement to add him to other platforms.
Square Enix recently announced that their 2020 live-service game, Marvel’s Avengers, will no longer receive new content or major updates after March 31. All official support for the game will also end on September 30, 2023, with digital sales ending on that date. Despite this, Crystal Dynamics has confirmed that the character of Spider-Man will remain exclusive to the PS4 and PS5 versions.
The saga began when, shortly ahead of the release of Marvel’s Avengers, Crystal Dynamics announced that Spider-Man would be added to the game at a later date, but only for PS4 and later PS5 players. In November 2021, Spider-Man finally appeared in the PlayStation versions. Fans speculated that this was because Sony owned the film rights to the character, but it was later revealed that this was not the case. Spider-Man also appears in Midnight Suns across all platforms.
Despite this, Crystal Dynamics has confirmed that Spider-Man will not be coming to Xbox or PC. Kotaku contacted Marvel, PlayStation, Square Enix, Embracer Group, and Crystal Dynamics for comment, but received no response. It is possible for Spider-Man to appear on other consoles, however, the people in charge of contracts and deals have not agreed to it. This means that if players want to play the complete version of the game after support ends in September, they will need to own a PlayStation.
The inability to have Spider-Man appear on other consoles highlights the issue of console-exclusive DLC. It is disappointing that the people in charge cannot agree to a gesture of goodwill for the Avengers players and let Spider-Man show up on Xbox and PC. It is also disappointing that players may have to own a PlayStation in order to continue playing the game. Hopefully, this issue will be resolved in the future, so that all players can enjoy the complete version of the game.
