Benfica reported on Sunday evening that Rúben Dias will make the switch to Manchester City for no less than 68 million euros. Nicolás Otamendi is walking the other way for 15 million euros.
Otamendi previously played in Portugal at FC Porto
Both players have yet to pass the medical examination and sign their contracts before the transfers are official. Manchester City has not yet formally responded to the upcoming transfers.
The 23-year-old Dias played nineteen international matches for Portugal. The central defender comes from the youth academy of Benfica and conquered a permanent starting place in the 2017/2018 season.
With his transfer fee of 68 million, Dias becomes the fifth most expensive defender of all time. Harry Maguire, who made the switch from Leicester City to Manchester United a year ago for 91.5 million, remains the most expensive defender ever.
Manchester City strengthened itself earlier in this transfer period with Orange international Nathan Aké (for 45 million from Bournemouth) and Ferrán Torres (23 million from Valencia).
32-year-old Otamendi has played at Manchester City since the summer of 2015. In that period he won the national title twice, once the FA Cup and four times the League Cup.
The Argentinian defender previously played in Portugal, with Benfica’s rival FC Porto. In 2014, that club sold him to Valencia, after which Otamendi made the switch to Manchester City a year later.
In addition to Otamendi, Leroy Sané (for 45 million to Bayern Munich), David Silva (free transfer to Real Sociedad) and Claudio Bravo (free transfer to Real Betis) left City this summer.
Manager Pep Guardiola’s team started the season with three points from two matches. On Sunday they lost no less than 2-5 to Leicester City at home.
