A man of American nationality has been arrested under criminal defamation law in Thailand for negatively evaluating their stay in a ‘resort’ in the country.
According reports the New York Times, the negative evaluation of the hotel arose because the administration made a $ 15 fee to bring your own bottle of gin to the restaurant of the establishment. The ‘Sea View Koh Chang resort’, also unhappy with the customer and his comment on the TripAdvisor network, reported what happened to the police.
The man, Wesley Barnes, was arrested and spent the weekend in prison. He is charged with criminal defamation, something for which he can go to jail for more than two years in Thailand. Apparently, the nature of the accusation is due to the fact that the hotel began to receive comments and attacks from other users online, and even death threats towards the manager.
Barnes started a campaign by posting negative messages on various platforms, even writing “Avoid this place as if it were the coronavirus”, behavior that the hotel considered defamatory and damaging to its reputation. Thailand is trying to rebuild the tourism sector that is currently badly affected by the pandemic.
