RB Leipzig is furious with Danny Makkelie and Kevin Blom. The Dutch gave Paris Saint-Germain a penalty on Tuesday and partly because of this, the French booked a crucial 1-0 victory in the group stage of the Champions League.
Tuchel: ‘Players played with their heart and soul’
Referee Makkelie put the ball on the spot after more than ten minutes after a foul by Marcel Sabitzer on Ángel Di María. There seemed to be little to worry about, but video referee Blom did not reverse Makkelie’s decision.
“I don’t understand anything about it. It is a clear schwalbe. There is zero contact. The penalty is really an absolute joke. We have a video referee for this, right?”, Leipzig coach Julian Nagelsmann wondered aloud.
“I don’t know where he was, but presumably he was watching another game. This is very sad at Champions League level. We deserved more than this defeat. PSG has not created any great opportunity.”
PSG coach Thomas Tuchel was also irritated afterwards, but then about the questions from the French press at the press conference. They found the game of last season’s losing finalist in the Champions League very poor.
“We defended well and gave everything. That’s why we won. I am not going to apologize for that. They are exhausted, they played with their heart and soul,” said Tuchel, who then cited PSG’s problems.
“We really tried to play football, but with what player material? Look at all the injuries in the selection and the very heavy schedule. If you realize what situation we are in, that would say enough.”
