Ronald Koeman is not satisfied with the VAR on Saturday after his first Clásico (1-3 loss). The FC Barcelona coach found Real Madrid’s penalty kick undeserved and asked referee Juan Martínez Munuera for an explanation after the final whistle.

‘I am happy with the way we played’

Real received a penalty after more than an hour of play after Sergio Ramos was held by Clément Lenglet. The Spanish defender then hit from 11 meters, bringing ‘De Koninklijke’ to 1-2.

“I didn’t think it was a penalty, because Lenglet was first caught by Ramos”, said Koeman. “I asked the referee why the VAR is only against Barcelona.”

A few minutes before half time, Lionel Messi was knocked out by Casemiro, but the referee and the VAR did not see a penalty for Barcelona.

“I hope someone can explain to me more about how the VAR works in Spain,” Koeman grumbled. “We did not receive any help from the VAR against Sevilla and Getafe. It is good that there is a VAR, but it must be there for all teams.”

Barcelona eventually lost 1-3 to a goal from Luka Modric in the final phase and suffered the second league defeat in a row. Last week was lost 1-0 at Getafe. Despite this, Koeman remains optimistic.

“I am happy with the way we played,” he concluded. “The penalty has had a big impact on the result, but I have confidence in my selection. Even after the defeats against Getafe and Real Madrid. With our qualities we will eventually win again. I have no doubt about that.”

Due to the loss in the Clásico, Barcelona can be found in the middle bracket with only seven points from five games. Real leads La Liga with thirteen points from six duels.
