Ronald Koeman also won the last exhibition game in the run-up to the competition start with FC Barcelona on Saturday. The Dutch coach saw his team win 1-0 against newly promoted Elche in Camp Nou.
Antoine Griezmann scored the only goal of the match after just two minutes. The Frenchman tapped a cross from Jordi Alba from close by in a fast attack from Barcelona.
Frenkie de Jong played the entire match at Barcelona. Lionel Messi, who was twice accurate in the previous exhibition match against Girona (3-1 win), also completed the ninety minutes.
For the victory against Elche, Barcelona received the Trofeo Joan Gamper. Normally, the Catalans invite a well-known foreign opponent to this match, but that was not possible this year.
FC Barcelona played a total of three friendly matches prior to the first league match. A week ago, Koeman made his unofficial debut with a 3-1 victory over Gimnàstic de Tarragona.
The new season in La Liga has already started last weekend, but Barcelona does not have to take action for the first time until next week. Koeman’s team starts the competition on September 27 with a home game against Villarreal.
