On Monday, the KNVB launched an investigation into Saturday’s Kitchen Champion Division match between MVV Maastricht and SC Cambuur. The union is examining whether part of the MVV supporters are guilty of racist behavior.
During the match, Cambuur attacker Issa Kallon was the target. At the start of the second half, the stadium speaker called for the game to be stopped due to racist behavior by the fans.
“Of course we cooperate fully with the investigation of the KNVB. If it is proven that there was indeed racism, then MVV Maastricht will certainly distance itself from it. That does not belong in our stadium”, says MVV director Erik Noor.
After the match, Cambuur coach Henk de Jong said Omrop Fryslân already quite disappointed by the behavior of a group of MVV supporters, but also to admire the way in which the referee and his players dealt with it.
“The referee was great. He came to us at half time and explained what he would do in the second half,” said De Jong. “Especially Jarchinio Antonia, Calvin Mac-Intosh and Issa Kallon said, ‘We just want to keep playing.’ That’s a signal from the group.”
The match in stadium De Geusselt was a failure for MVV, as Cambuur won 1-7. Robert Mühren and Antonia scored twice on behalf of the visitors.
