Jürgen Klopp is very wary of Atalanta, which is Liverpool’s opponent in the Champions League on Tuesday. The German manager hits the Italian team higher than Ajax and FC Midtjylland, the other clubs in group D.
“It will be the biggest challenge in the Champions League. Ajax and Midtjylland were also challenges, but Atalanta has been performing well for two or three years and has arrived,” Klopp said at his press conference on Monday.
The Serie A club, who made up a 0-2 deficit against Ajax (2-2) last week, reminds Klopp of Leeds United. “They have a special approach and are somewhat comparable in terms of tactics. It will be a very difficult game.”
After two rounds of play, Liverpool (six points) and Atalanta (four) are in the best position in group D. Yet 53-year-old Klopp does not attach much value to that in this phase.
“It’s still very early in the season, so we shouldn’t be too concerned with where we are. So far it’s going well, but we just have to keep focusing on the next game.”
The match between Atalanta and Liverpool starts on Tuesday at 9 p.m. The kick-off is at FC Midtjylland-Ajax at the same time. There are concerns at Ajax, because a number of players have not been able to travel to Denmark due to corona problems.
