The New Yorker said it had suspended Toobin from office after the incident and would investigate.

A CNN spokesman said: “Jeff Toobin asked for leave to deal with a personal matter and I gave it to him.”

None of the media specified how long Toobin would be absent, who should have dealt with the controversial issue of appointing a judge to the Supreme Court and the presidential election.

An event related to his latest book about Donald Trump has also been postponed.

Toobin declined to comment on the incident to CNN Business, but sent a statement to Vice, who said the incident was an accident.

“I made a shameful and stupid mistake, thinking the camera wasn’t on. I apologize to my wife, family, friends and colleagues. I thought I didn’t see Zoom. I thought no one on the Zoom meeting saw me. I thought I turned off the video on Zoom, “he said.
