Due to a mutual draw (0-0), Italy and Poland have not been able to take advantage of the loss of points of groupmate the Netherlands against Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Nations League. France and Portugal were also stuck on a goalless draw in the A division on Sunday evening.

World and European champions in balance

Poland and Italy entered the field in Gdansk knowing that the Orange squad had stuck at 0-0 earlier in the evening on a visit to Bosnia and Herzegovina. The visitors in particular were out to widen the gap with the Netherlands, but that did not work.

Especially in the first half, the Italians had the better of the game. Federico Chiesa was the closest to a goal, but the winger’s shot just flew over the crossbar. After the break, linkback Emerson Palmieri found keeper Lukasz Fabianski on his way twice.

Despite the return of top striker Robert Lewandowski, Poland could do little to counter this and will not be dissatisfied with a point.

Italy is still the leader in group A1, with five points from three matches. The Netherlands and Poland follow with four points each, Bosnia and Herzegovina has two.

Reigning world champion France had crushed Ukraine 7-1 earlier this week in an exhibition match, but reigning European champion Portugal turned out to be of a different order in the Stade de France.

In the first half, Portugal was even closest to the opening goal, but Cristiano Ronaldo, Nélson Semedo and João Félix were careless with the opportunities. On the other hand, only Antoine Griezmann was still somewhat dangerous with a roller.

After the break, both countries were mainly busy not to lose the match, although Portugal saw a goal rejected for offside. A somewhat bloodless 0-0 was therefore the logical consequence.

Due to the draw, France and Portugal remain engaged in a fierce battle for the lead in group A3. Both now have seven points from three games, Croatia and Sweden follow with three and zero points respectively.
